SAN FRANCISCO: Amazon boasted that its virtual assistant Alexa is capable of 1,000 “skills,” as the online retail giant bolsters defences against rivals such as Google and Apple. 

The Seattle-based company said in a blog post that the programs were developed specifically for the voice-commanded Alexa software used in Amazon devices such as Echo and Fire TV. 

Amazon released voice-enabled wireless speaker Echo in late 2014, infusing it with virtual assistant smarts that enable it to answer questions or control linked devices upon command.

Scientists raised the possibility that the Zika virus can be transmitted by oral sex — perhaps even by kissing — on Friday in a letter to The New England Journal of Medicine describing one such case in France.

A single incident may seem trivial. But until early this year, there was only one known instance of sexual transmission of the Zika virus — a 2008 case in which a mosquito researcher just back from Africa infected his wife in Colorado.

First, news broke Wednesday that Swift and Adam Wiles, aka Calvin Harris, had ended their 15-month relationship; soon after, Wiles tweeted a gentle goodbye to the romance, saying that “what remains is a huge amount of love and respect.” Swift retweeted it, the internet celebrity equivalent of sitting with an ex at a cafeteria table for all the lunchroom to see.

Muhammad Ali: Inside his final hours

(CNN)Muhammad Ali, the iconic three-time world heavyweight boxing champion who died Friday, had recently shunned the public spotlight he once seemed to revere.

His last known appearance was at a Parkinson's fundraiser April 9 in Phoenix, according to the Arizona Republic.

At the annual fundraising event for the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute, one of the most recognizable faces on the planet was shielded in part by dark sunglasses, according to a photo posted by the newspaper.

Ali had missed the gala the previous two years, the newspaper reported. On that April night, however, one of the most beloved athletes of all time would receive a final standing ovation.

Ali's last battle

On Monday, the charismatic former boxer became ill with what family spokesman Bob Gunnell described as a respiratory issue.

He was admitted to the HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center in Scottsdale in fair condition that night.

"We expected that to be the case," Gunnell told reporters Saturday. "You know, Muhammad has battled back many times. We expected it to happen this time."
