Katy Perry has had number one albums and songs before, but until Saturday, she has never been what some might call a great sports prognosticator. Or, a even a mediocre sports prognosticator. However, when the I Kissed a Girl singer appeared on College GameDay on Saturday, October 4, and accurately predicted that Ole Miss would triumph over Alabama, Katy Perry became one while serving as a guest picker on the ESPN segment at the very first college football game she has ever attended.
Katy Perry, 30, was not as successful though, with her prediction that Oklahoma would beat TCU. Oklahoma lost that game, 37-33. She chose Oklahoma because she is, apparently, attracted to quarterback Trevor Knight of the Sooners, asking him to “call her.”
An article in USA Today called Katy Perry’s stint as a sports prognosticator “awkward” and “ridiculous.” Yes, she threw a corndog at one of the cameras and yanked off a mascot head from ESPN sports broadcaster Lee Corso’s head, but…she is Katy freakin’ Perry, after all, and if she did not act at least somewhat outrageous as a guest picker, she would have gone against her character.
Whether entirely by luck or through her mystical powers at predicting the outcome of some football games…nobody is perfect, not even Katy Perry…she predicted the upset of Ole Miss over Alabama. Ole Miss won the game on Saturday, 23-17.
The singer of Teenage Dream and Roar celebrated her accurate prediction of the upset by going to a local bar in Oxford, Mississippi, called Funkys. While she was there, an intrepid fan, Nick Rutherford — well done, Nick — shot a Vine of her pounding down a beer and diving off of a bar.
While Perry is not likely to quit her lucrative career as a singer to become an ESPN sports broadcaster, she became one for one brief shining moment on College GameDay on Saturday, October 4. After that, she joined in the festivities of the revelers in Oxford, Mississippi, by slamming back a brewski or two, or…more. Katy Perry might have lost some fans in Alabama, but she probably gained quite a few in Mississippi.
Maybe some of Katy Perry’s fans thought it was odd that the Firework singer voiced Moe Szyslak’s girlfriend in a 2010 episode of The Simpsons or used her vocal talents to do the character of Smurfette in the 2011 animated flick, The Smurfs. But, that was then and this is now. Her gig as a guest picker on ESPN’s College GameDay just might qualify as the strangest thing Perry has done yet, if one does not count her brief marriage to Russell Brand.
After Saturday and Katy Perry’s accurate prediction of Ole Miss beating Alabama in an upset, college football might not ever be the same again. It might not qualify as a sign of the coming Apocalypse, but it ranks up there. To be fair to Ole Miss, the team is much improved this year and could end up being one of the best teams in the SEC. Still, their victory over Alabama was not one that many people outside of Mississippi would have predicted.
